Using Gmail Filters to Manage Emails From Your Students

Welcome! This application will take your class roster from ANGEL and transform it into an email filter for use with Gmail. Let's get started.

How Do I Use This?

First, to understand how this works, you should probably read Using labels and Using filters from Gmail's help. Basically, what we are going to do is create a filter that will albe all email you get from your students with a label that uniquely identifies all mail from any class you are teaching.

First, you need to get the data from ANGEL. From the home page in ANGEL, select the course you would like to create a filter for. Click on the "Manage" tab, and then click the link for "Roster". At the top of the Roster Editor, there is a link for "Export". Click that. It will open a pop-up window and ask you to save a file named "roster.tsv". Download this file.

Now, you need to complete the form below. In the "Your Email" field, you need to enter your PSU email address (of the form "abc123@psu.edu"). This step is to make sure that you don't get added to your email filter (that would get confusing).

In the "Roster File" field, you need to upload the "roster.tsv" file we created above. Locate it on your computer and upload it. When you have finished, click "Create My Filter".

The instructions will continue after you've clicked "Create My Filter"
